ART meets Veterinary SCIENCE: 

 

In Vetland – Art Meets Vet Science Artist in Residence Exhibition 2009

Perdita Phillips is showing the results of her 2009 artist in residence at Murdoch University’s School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences. Her X-ray sculptures, photographs and drawings will be situated in both the clinical and research areas. Working on themes of internal and external surfaces the artist has investigated diagnostic palpation as the point of contact between human and nonhuman worlds. The exhibition includes the participatory drawing work Animalworld Map recently exhibited at Newcastle Art Space in conjunction with the Minding Animals conference.

Sponsored by the Murdoch University Veterinary Trust, the Art Meets Vet Science program is a first at Murdoch University, with a goal of bringing together artistic, creative, and scientific ways of viewing and understanding the world.  Possible outcomes include expanding an artist’s understanding of animals by deepening an understanding of vet science, encouraging creative ways of investigating subjects such as ethics, human/animal dynamics etc, and shaping student and staff’s ways of understanding how others view animals.   For more information, see http://www.veterinarytrust.murdoch.edu.au/     


 

Call for Artist

Call for Artist in Residence at Murdoch University School of Veterinary & Biomedical Sciences.  Due:  15 Aug 2008

Murdoch University Veterinary Trust welcomes the opportunity to host an artist in residence for six weeks at the Murdoch University School of Veterinary & Biomedical Sciences, near Perth, Australia. 

Working alongside scientists, educators, and students, the successful applicant will gain an opportunity to experience the continuum of veterinary practice from biomolecular research and parasitology to the dynamics of the animal/human relationship.  Through interaction with students and staff, investigation into cross-disciplinary actions, the artist in residence will invigorate the learning atmosphere by providing “new ideas, new ways of thinking, new modes of seeing, and new contexts for doing”

The selected artist will receive:

  • A living allowance of $3,000
  • Extended access to the school for a period of 6 weeks (additional resources such as bio-computing lab, anatomy, dissection and lab areas, genomics equipment, surgical/clinical facilities may be available with prior arrangement).
  • On campus accommodation and office space may be available if required.
  • An exhibition at the School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences
  • Additional budget for materials and travel may be negotiated separately. 

The selected artist will:

  • Engage students and staff informally throughout residency to encourage interaction across disciplines.
  • Contribute to regular discussion forums for students, staff, or invited guests, or otherwise engage students and staff to achieve the objectives of Art meets Veterinary Science.
  • Donate a representative body of work from the residency to the Veterinary Trust
  • Negotiate a limited copyright permission to reproduce works or visual images of works.

Criteria for participation
This program is open to artists working in any art form. Artists must have completed a formal course in their preferred media (or be undertaking a formal course with significant professional experience).  Demonstrable experience engaging students, staff or members of the public by hosting discussions or forums, or making presentations preferred.

Critical Dates for Applicants
Application Closing Date:          15 Aug 2008
Application Announcement:       1 July 2008
Timing of Residency:                 To be negotiated for 6 weeks between 1 Sep 2008- 1 August 2009 onsite at Murdoch University School of Veterinary & Biomedical.
Exhibition:                                 Within 3 months of residency or by mutually agreed date.

Applications
Murdoch University Veterinary Trust is currently accepting applications for our 2008-2009 Artist in Residence.  Applications must be received by 15 Aug 2008
Applications must include the following items:

  • A completed MUVT application cover sheet & checklist
  • A current resume (maximum 2 pages in length)
  • A proposed program of activity (maximum 2 pages in length)
  • A sample of art work images, accompanied by a list of works stating artist’s name, date executed, title, media and size.
    • 5-10 recent images(works submitted should be no more than 3 years old).
    • Works preferably sent as high resolution images on CD Rom (slides or jpeg files also accepted). 
    • All images must be labeled with artist’s name, date, and title.
    • If sending material to be returned include a self-addressed envelope with postage paid.
